Tell us about your hero
American Hero means different things to different people. It can be a friend or loved one who is currently serving overseas, a local fireman or policeman who came to your rescue in a time of need, a border patrol agent who stands guard late at night or a family member who was taken before their time while in the line of duty. Regardless of the meaning you choose, we all have American Heroes in our lives that are deserving of our respect, admiration and thanks.
We want to hear about your American hero. Tell us a story, write a personal message or simply say thank you; this is your place to tell the world about that special and heroic person in your life.
Please limit posts to honoring members of the public safety community (i.e. police, fire, EMS, border patrol, corrections and probations, DHS, FBI, DPS, etc.) and the military (all branches - active or otherwise).

My hero is my husband, Craig VanHyning. Craig is a hero to me and to our family for many reasons. He began his career serving as a United States Army Ranger. Upon leaving Army service, he chose a career in Information Technology. Knowing that career left a void in his desire to help others, he began training as a volunteer firefighter. Craig was trained extensively and became responsible to help put out hazardous fires, to rescue people from motor vehicle accidents and collapsed and burning buildings, and for other such situations. As a volunteer firefighter, he helped serve our community, responding to emergency calls at all times of the day and night. Soon thereafter, as many firefighters do, Craig sought training as an Emergency Medical Technician. As a firefighter/EMT, he put himself in harm’s way on a regular basis. But to him, he was just there to help others in need.
